ITALIANO

ENGLISH

In 1946 an agreement was signed concerning the Italian immigration into Belgium, which was later summarised by those who experienced it on their own skin as “they have sold us for a bag of coal”. An Italy, weakened by the war, suggested again to her jobless people the same road already taken at the end of the XIX century: migration. “Either migrant or brigand”, as Francesco Saverio Nitti, an expert of Southern Italy’s problems and a passionate politician, wrote in the early XX century. But in 2016 this 70th anniversary joins the equally painful anniversary of the catastrophe of Marchinelle that occurred on August 8th, 1956: in the coal mine of “Bois du Cazier” 262 people died. They belonged to 12 nationalities, but 136 of them were Italian and 95 Belgian. This tragedy changed the history of Italian immigration to Belgium. Lest we forget, but let’s remember that, even though the “worst seats” may be assigned to a given nationality in a given historical period, the criteria of exploitation are always the same. It is not enough, therefore, singling ourselves out.
